PSI seeks candidates for the position of Intern to support the Communications Department in its role of telling the story of PSI. The intern will have a variety of responsibilities within the department, with particular emphasis on media, social media, publications and multimedia. The position requires flexibility and willingness to assume varied duties and projects and offers an opportunity to assist PSI staff on a variety of projects. PSI offers a dynamic, creative and progressive work environment.

This internship position is based in Washington, D.C. and reports to the Associate Communications Manager (for all media-related support) and Communications Coordinator (for all social media, publications and multimedia-related support). This is a paid position and will be approximately 40 hours/week. ?

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Communications Intern will be responsible for researching, generating, and follow-up activities with media leads. The intern will also be responsible for engaging in PSI?s social media efforts on a variety of internal and external platforms, managing PSI?s multimedia assets, and providing support on the production of Impact, PSI?s quarterly magazine.

Media related duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Work with Vocus, a media monitoring software tool, to research, pitch, place and monitor PSI success stories and expert opinions in traditional and social media.
  • Maintain media contact database.
  • Occasional research and/or proofreading for various written projects.
  • Opportunities for professional growth in media relations including pitching and writing press releases.
  • Occasionally fulfilling other administrative functions and general staff support as required.

Multimedia-related duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage and maintain PSI?s media library.
  • Upload multimedia onto various social media channels, including YouTube.

Publications-related duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct research on global health issues and players for each issue of Impact Magazine.
  • Update Impact mailing list and manage in-house mailing.
  • Transcribe interviews.

Social media-related duties include, but at not limited to:

  • Update PSI?s global social media channels with tweets, Facebook posts and YouTube videos.
  • Create and manage PSI?s Pinterest page.
  • Increase PSI?s social media engagement with followers and partners by commenting on blogs, posting on others? Facebook pages, increasing PSI?s favorability among followers on Twitter.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prefer an undergraduate or recent graduate with a background in communications or media relations with a strong interest in development and/or global health.
  • Understanding of media landscape and key players.
  • Excellent communication and social media skills.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Advanced computer skills (MS Office application, including Word, PowerPoint, Access and Excel).
  • Experience with Vocus or similar media monitoring software preferred.
  • Fluency in English.

The successful candidate will have excellent organizational and administrative skills with special attention to detail; proven ability to manage large workloads and organize work efficiently with minimal supervision; ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks within deadlines; demonstrated willingness and ability to work independently and on a team in a cooperative, problem-solving capacity; numerical literacy; and research experience. Preference will be given to candidates with an interest in international health & development issues.
