Unique items for bike, rider available in ?test lab?

Former racer-turned-designer Roland Sands expanded his resume by joining the retail ranks with the April 14 grand opening of the RSD Store in Los Alamitos, Calif.

Despite some unseasonable weather for Southern California in the days leading up to the event and overlapping a couple of iconic happenings ? including the TrailBlazers annual banquet and the Long Beach Grand Prix on the automotive side ? the store opening went off without a hitch, drawing a steady crowd of hardcore motorcyclists as well as plenty of interest from outside the industry.

Given the challenging economy, what made Sands and his team decide that adding a retail store to his custom bike, industrial design, hard parts and recently introduced apparel collection was a good idea?

?We really want to be in touch with our customer base,? he said. ?What better way to do that than to open a retail store where we sell our products and talk to the customer every day? We can now hear feedback daily and apply that to what we make and how we make it.?

Interestingly, the retail counter is directly adjacent to the design room, where Sands has his rapid prototype machine. It brings new meaning to being able to apply customer feedback directly to the product. However, as quickly as RSD can implement new designs, the retail store was no overnight idea.

Roland Sands, namesake of Roland Sands Design, got his start on the manufacturing side of the industry, but turned to his creative side to create his own company in 2005. RSD opened a retail store at its headquarters in mid-April.

?We have been putting the concept together for about a year, quietly selling some items to people who found us,? he said. ?Now we are committed to putting some real effort into making this a great place to outfit your body and your bike with some truly unique items.?

The shop offers a little bit of everything. Complete custom bike builds for surf/skate brand Hurley, actor Mickey Rourke and extreme athlete Travis Pastrana were on display at the grand opening. Other one-off items float in and out of the shop on a daily basis.

?Even before this grand opening, our concepts and lineup of products have been very well received. We knew the customers wanted something different than what has been on the market are out there ? and we are just the guys to supply that product,? Sands said. ?Our RSD hard parts have experienced solid growth, and while the apparel collection has only been available for about six months, we are doing what we set out to do ? making a product that doesn?t exist, keeping quality high and offering it at a good price. It has been exciting, for sure.?

RSD doesn?t intend to compete with dealers around the country who are already stocking RSD hard parts and the apparel lines. Instead, the plan is to walk a mile in their shoes and figure out parts and programs that will be better for all retailers.

?This is a local shop as well as a test lab for our ideas, and we are promoting it as such. We are working with a lot of the local papers and entities like the Army base down the street to get the word out,? Sands said. ?Los Alamitos is a business-friendly city, and they?ve been great to work with. We are also next to my hometown of Long Beach, so we?ll be doing some promotions there as well.?

The grand opening festivities featured the local vibe, with a taco vendor and local rockabilly band Signal Hillbillies performing in the parking lot amidst a pantheon of project bikes, such as the Ducati Desmo Tracker that graced the cover of Cycle World magazine. Sand?s father and Performance Machine founder Perry Sands even fired up his 100-year-old Indian for the occasion. Inside, the store featured artwork from local artists in addition to some uniquely RSD touches, such as the chandelier made from a jet aircraft drop tank.

The retail store will provide Roland Sands Design with a way ?to be in touch with its customer base.?

The store is more than just a retail showroom ? it is the headquarters, R&D shop, design studio and art gallery all in one. It?s essentially the nerve center for a burgeoning brand empire.

Stemming from his roots as a racer and designer for Performance Machine, Roland Sands has been steadily expanding and redefining his role in the industry. ?I was the head of design at Performance Machine, but I was outgrowing my position there about the same time my dad sold the business,? Sands recalled. ?I was much more creatively driven and didn?t want to stay in manufacturing.

?In 2005 I started my own brand, RSD, that eventually blossomed into a motorcycle products, parts and apparel design studio. This has given us the opportunity to work with many amazing companies in and outside the motorcycle industry.?

That client roster includes Bell Helmets, Ducati, Dunlop, K&N, Piaggio, Polaris, Toyota, Vance & Hines and many others. And with a retail operation now at the company?s fingertips, RSD will get an even better of idea of what drives the consumer.

Rise of far right in Greece worries mainstream

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Reeling from a vicious financial crisis that has cost them pensions and jobs, Greeks have been turning away in droves from the mainstream politicians they feel have let them down. Another political force is trying to tap the void, with blunt promises to "clean up" the country.

It's one that could see Europe's most extreme far right deputies take up seats in Greece's Parliament in crucial May 6 elections.

Black-clad Golden Dawn members have been storming across the campaign trail across Greece, stopping to chat at cafes and shops, handing out fliers promising security in crime-ridden neighborhoods ? and vowing to kick out immigrants.

Greece's borders, they say, must be sealed with land mines to stop illegal crossing into a country that became the entry point for 90 percent of the European Union's illegal migrants. Authorities estimate there are about 1 million migrants living in this country of 11 million.

Appealing to populist sentiment, Golden Dawn has been gathering donations of food and clothing to deliver to the needy while pledging to make politicians accountable for the crisis. Ordinary Greeks are struggling under tough conditions demanded for rescue loan deals that have pushed the country into a fifth year of recession.

"Golden Dawn stands against this corrupt system of power. All those who are responsible for the waste of public money must go to jail. That is our priority," said Ilias Kasidiaris, a 31-year-old party member who served in the Greek army's special forces.

Around him, the party offices in downtown Athens were a hive of activity, with newcomers dropping in and the membership list growing by the day. In the back, T-shirts and caps are for sale marked with the party logo, taken from the ancient Greek meander, a motif resembling the swastika and often seen on ancient mosaics, carvings and wall paintings.

Firmly on the fringe of the right since it first appeared 20 years ago, Golden Dawn garnered a meager 0.23 percent in the 2009 elections. Now, it looks set to easily win more than the 3 percent threshold needed to enter Parliament, with recent opinion polls showing support at about 5 percent.

The party has a barely veiled sinister side, and has been blamed for vicious attacks on immigrants. Members skirt questions about violence, saying they have no knowledge of such incidents.

"We don't do anything, we protect the Greeks," said Epaminondas Anyfantis, a mild-mannered, 59-year-old candidate who looks the antithesis of many of the young, muscled and shaven-headed members. "Now, if in protecting the Greeks, a foreigner might get a slap or a kick or something, I think that's in the framework of the protection of the Greeks. ... Because unfortunately the Greeks at the moment have come to the point of asking Golden Dawn for protection."

With parts of central Athens turning into ghetto-like neighborhoods where drug users inject openly and muggings and burglaries are regular events, many have lost confidence in the police.

Giorgos Vardzis, who lives in the small seaside town of Artemida, has taken down the numbers of Golden Dawn members in case of emergencies.

"Who else should I call, the police? ... When you ask for help from the police because you're being killed, you have to be killed first, and then the police will come," he said.

Immigrants are increasingly concerned.

"We are worried very much," said Javed Aslam, the head of the Pakistani community in Greece, during a recent anti-racist demonstration. "This is very bad. You can imagine one political party with weapons, with knives, they are going out in the roads, and this is politics? This is not politics!"

Led by Nikolas Mihaloliakos, who won a seat on the Athens city council in 2010 local elections and shocked Greeks by delivering a fascist salute in his first appearance there, Golden Dawn rejects the neo-Nazi label, pointing out that many of their fathers fought the Germans during the Nazi occupation of Greece.

"We are Greek nationalists. Nothing more and nothing less than that," said Kasidiaris.

But they don't hide their admiration for many of Hitler's policies, saying he eliminated unemployment in Germany. Golden Dawn members often give fascist salutes at marches and rallies featuring nationalist slogans and burning torches, pictures of which adorn walls in party offices.

And they are tapping into a deep well of discontent with the parties that have dominated Greek politics for decades, conservative New Democracy and socialist PASOK.

"Our children have no jobs. They cut my husband's pension," said Evlambia Spantidaki, sitting on the porch of a friend's house in Artemida. "For a while I voted New Democracy. I changed and voted for PASOK. But now nothing, none of them."

This year, her vote will go to Golden Dawn.

"All those people who are following us at the moment, let's be realistic ... they didn't suddenly become nationalists from one minute to the next," said Giorgos Germenis, a member of the party's political council responsible for ideology. He is running as a Golden Dawn candidate in the wider Athens area. "It is a vote of protest. They find confidence in the face of Golden Dawn, that it will enter Parliament and really shake up the system."

With none of its more than 220 candidates, bar its leader, a recognized politician, the party also plays to voters disillusioned with the political elite.

"We will never become politicians. We are soldiers and we will die soldiers," said Anyfantis. "We are soldiers fighting for a cause."

In a country that suffered famine under Nazi occupation and saw arbitrary detentions and torture under the 1967-74 military dictatorship, the party's growing popularity has alarmed many.

"I have been surprised and very worried by the explosion in the opinion polls of Golden Dawn, the most extreme form of the extreme right," Athens University political science professor Ilias Nicolacopoulos said shortly after elections were declared in mid-April.

So the mainstream has been scrambling to win back the right-wing vote, putting immigration at the top of the agenda. Public Order Minister Michalis Chrysohoidis has pledged to build detention centers for 30,000 illegal immigrants by 2014, with the first one to open within days. Police have raided migrant apartments, and legislation now allows authorities to force migrants to have health checks and medical treatment.

Immigrant groups say there has been a spike in racist violence recently.

"There is a worrying trend of racist attacks directed against non-EU foreigners in Greece," said Ketty Kehagioglou, UNHCR spokeswoman in Athens. "In times of instability it is always easy to look for scapegoats and extremist groups take advantage of this situation."

In an Athens hospital ward, Pakistani migrant Mohammad lies propped up on a bed, his right arm in a cast, his head bandaged, his nose broken ? the result of a severe beating one recent Sunday night by a group of about 25 men armed with wooden bats and iron rods, he said.

Across town in a small one-bedroom flat, his friend Ahmad is recovering from head and hand injuries from the same attack.

"They just asked 'what's your country?' and then they start beating us. ... With hands and wood and the iron rod," Ahmad said. Neither had spoken to the police about the incident. Fearing reprisals, they asked for only their first names to be used.

For their part, Golden Dawn seem confident of taking up parliamentary seats after May 6 ? even if it is on a protest vote.

"That is why the whole system is fighting us," said Anyfantis. "Because they are afraid that when we get into Parliament, the Greek people will understand that we are neither a gang, nor Nazis, nor children of Hitler. ... We are just Greek patriots, we love our country. We are prepared even to sacrifice ourselves for our beliefs, for the country, for its people."

Bioluminescent technology for easy tracking of GMO

ScienceDaily (Apr. 29, 2012) ? It is important to be able to monitor genetically modified (GM) crops, not only in the field but also during the food processing chain. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Biotechnology shows that products from genetically modified crops can be identified at low concentration, using bioluminescent real time reporter (BART) technology and loop mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP). The combination of these techniques was able to recognise 0.1% GM contamination of maize, far below the current EU limit of 0.9%.

In agriculture GM crops have been bred to improve crop yield or viability. For example some are resistant to herbicides or viruses. They are also used in the pharmaceutical industry to produce proteins such as collagen. However there is a constant debate about the safety of these crops and whether the human-made transgenes might enter the wild population by cross-fertilization.and produce herbicide resistant weeds.

Careful handling and sampling techniques are required to assess the GM content of a crop. The most common technique is polymerase chain reaction (PCR), however, this involves complex extraction procedures and rapid thermocycling, both of which require specific equipment. To overcome these problems researchers from Lumora Ltd. assessed whether they could use LAMP to amplify DNA at a constant temperature and use BART to identify GM-specific DNA in real time.

Dr Guy Kiddle from Lumora, who led the research, explained that LAMP-BART was able to detect as little as 0.1% GM contamination of maize, and, compared to PCR, was more tolerant of contaminating polysaccharides, meaning that the DNA clean-up process did not need to be as thorough. He commented, "This method requires only basic equipment for DNA extraction, and a constant temperature for DNA amplification and detection. Consequently LAMP-BART provides a 'field-ready' solution for monitoring GM crops and their interaction with wild plants or non-GM crops."

How Overpriced is US Health Insurance? ? naked capitalism

Over the past few years China has been building a massive socialized health care infrastructure that is aiming to deliver free local health services to 99% of the population. It is comprised of a massive network of clinics and small hospitals. So China has socialized medicine.

I have had experience with the socialized health care systems of Eastern Europe (former communist nations), all of which provide adequate services to 100% of their population with no insurance premiums. Because these nations are in the EU, the treatment plans are the same as those in Western Europe, they use the same drugs and procedures, and treatments for major illness (i.e., cancer) are usually initiated without delay. There isn?t much ?traditional? medicine in Eastern Europe ? the treatments are usually similar to those in the US.

The only problem is that these nations have been under vicious and sustained attack by foreign neoliberal agencies such as the IMF, World Bank, and the European Commission that have been demanding massive cuts in health care expenditures and privatizations, which have led to a serious decline in the quality of these systems. These demands are being made in order to pay foreign banks, by the way. So there has been a chronic shortage of funds and equipment in Eastern Europe, not to mention that doctor salaries are ridiculously low.

However, I believe people in Eastern Europe are not going to take this lying down. A few months ago people in Romania protested violently when their neoliberal president attempted to privatize their emergency medical system. He backed down, and a new prime minister was chosen, however, the very next day, the demon from the IMF that goes by the name of Jeffrey Sachs, flew in from Washington and demanded that austerity programs continue unabated in Romania, this to the dismay of the entire Romanian nation. But I think people like Jeffrey Sachs forget how the Romanians handled their last dictator.

I believe the people in Eastern Europe are far tougher than the Greeks. The Greeks have lost their fight, and are now doomed. But I don?t think Eastern Europeans, who fought against and defeated the evils of communism are going to let the EU and the Washington Consensus destroy their countries and their lives much further.

Pancreatic cancer gene discovery

Aggressive pancreatic tumours may be treatable with a new class of drugs, according to Cancer Research UK

Less than one in five people with this form of cancer are still alive a year after being diagnosed.

A study, published in the journal Nature, showed that a gene was being switched off in the cancerous cells.

The reseachers said drugs were already being tested which had the potential to turn the gene back on, to stop the spread of the cancer.

Around 7,800 people in the UK are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer every year and it is the fifth most deadly cancer.

These results raise the possibility that a class of promising new cancer drugs may be effective at treating some pancreatic cancers?

End Quote Dr Julie Sharp Cancer Research UK On/off

Studies in mice showed that a gene called USP9x, which normally stops a cell from dividing uncontrollably, is switched off in some pancreatic cancer cells.

The gene is not mutated, but other proteins and chemicals become stuck to it and turn the gene off.

Studies then showed that UPS9x was being turned off in human pancreatic cancer.

Prof David Tuveson, from the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Research Institute, said: "We suspected that the fault wasn't in the genetic code at all, but in the chemical tags on the surface of the DNA that switch genes on and off, and by running more lab tests we were able to confirm this.

"Drugs which strip away these tags are already showing promise in lung cancer and this study suggests they could also be effective."

Dr David Adams, from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, said: "This study strengthens our emerging understanding that we must also look into the biology of cells to identify all the genes that play a role in cancer."

They argue that up to 15% of pancreatic cancers could be down the turning this one gene off.

Dr Julie Sharp, Cancer Research UK's senior science information manager, said: "These results raise the possibility that a class of promising new cancer drugs may be effective at treating some pancreatic cancers."

However, stay away from any offers that appear too good actually. A standard scam is made for Sell Structured Settlement a dishonest buyer to offer a hefty cash, just to delay the sale process. Meanwhile, they revise their offer downward, anticipating the anxious seller to give in then sell their annuity payments for way less than.

After you have done your research and aquired online quotes between many structured settlement buyers, take note of the amount of time each buyer estimates it may need to complete the transaction. Be skeptical of your company that promises serious cash in just days or simply a couple of weeks. Federal law needs the buyer to receive court approval before selling structured settlement payments. This is achieved primarily to safeguard the property owner. A legal court having jurisdiction must determine if the proposed transaction is lawful, and this the seller incorporates a legitimate really need to sell the installments, and this not selling would start a financial hardship. The entire process should originate from 2 to 3 months to accomplish, as well as any company advertising a shorter time frame is just not being completely honest.

Body in bunker believed to be murder suspect

Authorities near Seattle found the body of a man who holed up in a fortified hillside bunker after allegedly killing his wife and daughter. NBC's Michelle Franzen reports.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated at 4:42 p.m. ET: NORTH BEND, Wash. -- Law officers hunting for a self-trained survivalist suspected of killing his wife and daughter on Saturday found a body inside elaborate, underground bunker?in the woods of Washington state where he was thought to have been hiding.

Authorities used explosives Saturday morning to blow the roof off the heavily fortified bunker and gain access. They said the body found inside?was believed to be that of Peter Keller, who has been on the run since Sunday.

"Once inside deputies discovered a body which they said appeared to be Keller, and it appeared as though he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound," the King County Sheriff's Office said in a press release.

A gun and some blood were found near the body, The Seattle Times reported.

No shots were fired by law enforcement furing the 22-hour standoff, Sheriff Steve Strachan said.

Members of the sheriff's Bomb Disposal Unit were sent in to clear the bunker to ensure there were no planted explosives or booby traps.

Keller had spent eight years building the bunker into the side of Rattlesnake Ridge in the Cascade mountains, police said. It was thoroughly camouflaged and had multiple levels. Photos of the inside of the bunker, released by the King County Sheriff's Office, showed a shelf full of ammunition boxes stacked inside Ziploc bags.

On Friday, authorities pumped tear gas into the structure after locating it in the Cascade foothills east of Seattle. The dozens of officers didn't immediately enter the bunker because they believed its occupant was armed, and that it might be booby-trapped.

Officers kept watch over the bunker overnight.

With clear weather and a fresh SWAT team in place Saturday morning, it was time to act more aggressively, King County sheriff's Sgt. Katie Larson said.

than 100 officers and volunteers from the King County Sheriff?s Office, the Seattle Police Department and other area agencies were on hand.

No police were injured in the siege. Two officers were treated for dehydration and hypothermia from chilly overnight temperatures and released,?Larson said.

The raid ended a tense week for law enforcement officials who tried to track down Keller, a gun enthusiast described by his family as having a "survivalist mentality." That Keller was likely armed and on the loose in an extremely popular hiking and mountain-biking area east of Seattle kept many people on edge.

"There's been a huge sigh of relief," Larson said. "Our people are out safe, and the trails are now safe for the community to use."

Authorities believe a survivalist suspected of killing his wife and daughter fled to this underground bunker in the woods east of Seattle.

Keller had spent eight years building the bunker into the side of Rattlesnake Ridge, police said. It was thoroughly camouflaged and had multiple levels. Photos of the inside of the bunker, released by the King County Sheriff's Office, showed a shelf full of ammunition boxes stacked inside Ziploc bags.

SWAT teams spent a grueling seven hours on the mountainside Friday morning, virtually crawling over dangerously steep terrain slick with mud from recent rains, before they found the bunker. A number of officers were treated intravenously for dehydration, and one broke his ankle, said sheriff's Sgt. Cindi West said.

After long shifts, the officers appeared exhausted, their faces smeared with camouflage paint, as they rode down the mountain in sport-utility vehicles or armored carriers to be replaced by fresher teams.

SWAT officers who kept watch on the bunker through Friday night said they saw lights going on and off, and they believed its occupant had everything necessary to remain inside for a long time ? including a generator, food, gas mask, bullet-resistant vest and many guns.

Photographs found in Keller's home after the killings gave authorities an idea of where it was; in one picture that they enhanced, detectives could make out buildings in nearby North Bend. Combined with reports from alert hikers who remembered seeing his faded red pickup truck at the Rattlesnake Ridge trailhead, the sheriff's office sent experienced trackers to the area, where they found off-trail boot prints confirming their belief that he was somewhere on the ridge.

They could smell smoke from its woodstove before they found it.

Authorities pumped tear gas into the structure Friday, but it failed to flush the occupant ? either because it didn't penetrate deep enough into the structure, or because the person had a gas mask.

Officers described the bunker as "amazingly fortified" and said the photos recovered from Keller's house don't do it justice, West said.

The bunker was found at about the 1,350-foot level, several hundred yards due east of a trailhead at Rattlesnake Ridge. It had several entryways and ladders.

Lynnettee and Kaylene Keller were found dead in their home

Court documents described Keller as a loner who has a survivalist mentality and has been stockpiling supplies in the woods.

An arrest warrant issued Wednesday accuses him of two counts of first-degree murder and one count of first-degree arson; the home was set on fire after Keller's wife and daughter were shot.

The fire at Keller's home was stopped before the house burned down, and authorities said they found seven gasoline cans placed in different areas of the home.

The King County medical examiner has determined Kaylene Keller, 18, and her mother, Lynnettee Keller, 41, both died from gunshots to the head. Their bodies were found in their bedrooms.

Kaylene's boyfriend told detectives that Peter Keller had shown him his gun collection and several large-caliber rifles and handguns, court documents said. The boyfriend, who was not identified, said Kaylene had told him her father took long hikes on the weekends and was stockpiling supplies at a fort in the woods.

Peter Keller withdrew $6,200 from a bank last week and told one of his co-workers at a computer refurbishing store in Preston that he might not return, according to court documents.

PFT: Browns trade up to No. 3, select Richardson

Brian Quick PicGetty Images

Indications throughout Friday were that the St. Louis Rams would select a wide receiver with the 33rd pick in the draft. LSU?s Rueben Randle, Georgia Tech?s Stephen Hill, and South Carolina?s Alshon Jeffery were the big-name guys remaining after the draft?s first day. But St. Louis drafted small-schooler Brian Quick at No. 33.

Appalachian State?s all-time leader in receptions (202), receiving yards (3,418), and touchdown catches (31), Quick is a long-armed former basketball player who generated surprisingly little buzz in draftnik circles. He was considered to have had a poor Senior Bowl and didn?t play in the SEC or Big 12.

Quick was among the Rams? pre-draft visitors, however, and he had first-round grades from several NFL area scouts. In St. Louis, Quick will be tasked with helping to turn around a receiver corps that has been among the league?s worst since the days of Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt.

It?s a lot to ask of the largely unheralded prospect, but Quick possesses ideal size (6-foot-4, 220) and downfield playmaking ability, averaging 16.9 yards per catch in his college career. Quick has drawn some comparisons to another small-school product, Saints receiver Marques Colston.

SMU hires Jankovich as hoops coach-in-waiting

Illinois State's Tim Jankovich has been hired as the presumed head coach-in-waiting under new SMU coach Larry Brown.

Jankovich's title at SMU will be associate head coach, according to the school's announcement of his hiring Thursday.

The Mustangs hired Brown last week. The 71-year-old Hall of Fame coach is coaching on the college level for the first time since leading Kansas to the 1988 national championship.

Illinois State went 105-64 with four NIT appearances over the past five seasons under Jankovich. Previously, he spent five years as an assistant for Bill Self at two schools.

"Tim was highly recommended by Kansas coach Bill Self, and I am very excited to have him at SMU," Brown said in a statement released by SMU. "The number and quality of coaches interested in coming to SMU has been tremendous; and to get someone with his experience and success as a head coach is invaluable."

Jankovich's first job as a head coach was at North Texas in 1993-97, where he led the Mean Green from a 5-21 record the season before his arrival to a 14-15 mark in his first season.

Illinois State won at least 20 games four times under Jankovich, who before that was an assistant for Self at Illinois (one seasons) and Kansas (four seasons). Self was on the SMU campus for Brown's formal introduction Monday.

Jankovich has also been assistant coach on the staffs of Eddie Sutton, Jack Hartman, Lon Kruger, Boyd Grant, Gene Iba, Bob Weltlich and Kevin Stallings.

Most of Illinois State's team is returning next season. Jankovich and athletic director Gary Friedman told the players of the coach's departure in a meeting Thursday.

Friedman will lead the search for a new coach at Illinois State.

Romanian govt falls in no-confidence vote

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) ? Romania's government fell Friday in a no-confidence vote, as opposition parties seized on widespread public anger over biting austerity measures, cronyism and corruption.

Some 235 lawmakers voted against the government of Prime Minister Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, four more votes than needed.

Opposition leader Victor Ponta said the vote represented the end "of an abusive system that uses any weapon possible."

"Sometimes there is justice. Today there was justice," he declared.

President Traian Basescu nominated Ponta as the prime minister-designate and asked him to present a governing program and Cabinet to Parliament for approval.

Calling for calm, Basescu said: "There was a democratic process in Parliament. There is no reason for panic. Romania's finance ministry has substantial reserves that can cope with any event."

The Czech government also faces a vote of no confidence Friday, which it is expected to survive amid growing public anger against austerity measures and corruption.

Former Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc, whose 4-year-old government was toppled in February after weeks of often violent protests over austerity measures, called the vote "a victory for opportunism in politics and party swapping."

However, he added: "I take responsibility for this failure."

Romania's national currency, the leu, fell close to an all-time low on the news.

Thousands of people have protested in both Romania and the Czech Republic in recent months, calling for their governments to abandon the belt-tightening measures and resign, in some of the biggest rallies seen since the overthrow of communism in 1989.

Boc called on the Romanian opposition to "immediately" take on the responsibility of governing the country to avoid political and economic instability.

"Any moment of instability means Romanians losing money from their pockets," he said after meeting Basescu.

In Prague, Prime Minister Petr Necas vowed to continue with reforms and cuts if the government survives the Czech vote of no confidence.

"We have to take the steps today. If we postpone them, we will have to adopt them anyway but they will be much more painful," he told lawmakers.

Bohuslav Sobotka, chairman of the major opposition Social Democrats, said it was not normal for the government "to exist when it ignores the mass protests of citizens in the streets."

About 100,000 people rallied in Prague on Saturday, calling on the government to scrap the cuts and leave office. The following day, leaders of the three parties in the center-right government dissolved their coalition. The split was triggered when Vit Barta, a prominent member of the centrist Public Affairs party which ran on an anti-corruption ticket in 2010, refused to resign after being convicted of paying bribes.

Czechs are angry about a sales tax hike and an extra 7 percent income tax slapped on high earners. The government has also revised earlier promises to increase pensions and introduced a new entrance fee for university students. Unions say health and pension reforms will hurt ordinary people the most. The Social Democrats have surged in opinion polls.

In Bucharest, the government hiked the sales tax to 24 percent and slashed public sector wages by one-fourth to meet the conditions of a euro20 billion ($26 billion) bailout it took from the International Monetary Fund, the European Union and the World Bank in 2009.

"We don't want any more dubious firms, no more selling under the market price and huge bribes as we have now," said Ponta, leader of Romania's opposition Social Democracy Party.

Orthodox Church: Don?t probe ancient texts for extremism

A top Russian Church official has said that ancient religious texts should not be checked for extremist calls or statements, suggesting rather that more recent teachings be probed.

The head of the Moscow Patriarchate?s department for relations between the Church and Society Vsevolod Chaplin expressed this opinion at a Public Chamber session. The cleric said that courts? recent recognition of certain religious texts as extremist merely ignited debate on whether courts should in fact decide such issues, and whether they need more expert support in this.

A number of texts such as the Hindu Bhagavad Gita as It Is and various Muslim writings have been the subject of court cases regarding their potential ?extremist? nature, with some subsequently banned.

?It is obvious that many religious texts could and should be recognized as extremist if they had been written today. But these texts relate to completely different periods in history. Should we not introduce a precise historical point, so we can consider texts from the point of view of contemporary political and public practice? For instance, we could consider only texts written 30 or 50 years ago and later,? Chaplin said.

He added that a different approach should be introduced for religious works written after the establishment of modern legal practice throughout the world, which happened only after WWII.

At the same time, Chaplin said that while ancient texts cannot be ?put on trial? in themselves, those who advocate their teachings should be investigated and tried. With this aim, he suggested developing a single and precise set of evaluation criteria, to minimize the influence of personal tastes.

The cleric noted that even the Bible has certain quotes that, if taken out of context, would be considered as direct calls for violence. "?A witch thou dost not keep alive? ? if you go out on the streets and start shouting this and gather a crowd that would follow this quote ? this would be bad and should not be done," Chaplin said.

The Russian Orthodox Church currently claims that it is under attack from unspecified ?evil forces? seeking to impose evil liberal ideology in the country. Last weekend the Church held a 50-thousand-strong collective prayer in Moscow?s main cathedral to show unity and resolution in the face of adversity.

How Steve Jobs wanted to surprise 1 millionth iMac buyer

Just imagine the joy.

(Credit: Screenshot: Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)

Over the last year, there appears to have been some considerable focus on the idea that Steve Jobs might not have been a perfect human being.

This, generally, has pleased those who are.

So it is lovely to redress the balance a little with a tale from Ken Segall's new book "Insanely Simple: The Obsession That Drives Apple's Success," which came out today.

It seems that the folks at MacRumors sat up all night reading it. For they came up with the story of what Jobs wanted to do for the buyer of the 1 millionth iMac. Yes, for them, not to them.

Inspired, perhaps, by Willy Wonka, Apple's CEO wanted to put a golden certificate inside the 1 millionth iMac box. Whoever bought it would have the price refunded and be flown to Cupertino for a tour.

Where Jobs would meet them in top hat and tails.

No, I have not be imbibing strange, dark chocolate. This is what the book says. Indeed, he was only thwarted in his quest to plumb the Depps of amusement by California law.

It states that entry to sweepstakes should not require the actual handing over of money. Which, in the way that California gets sometimes, rather ruined all the fun.

Jobs wanted to meet a real fanboy. Or at least someone who chose to buy Apple products.

And so a fine, altruistic idea was tossed into the trash.

Team Building Challenges | Free - Business in Australia - Business ...

With the acceleration in the build-up of new team building companies, the appeal of team building challenges is apparent. Big and small they are everywhere and their reasons for use are more diverse than ever. But since when does the idea of a challenge resonate with so much of the working world? The recorded history of team building stretches way back into the early twentieth century (although I?m sure it has been around longer in some shape or form). However, it is this century that has really taken team building to the fore. I am sure some would argue that it is more a commercialised venture these days, but the underlying values at the core of team building challenges are perhaps more important than ever before.

Team ? noun * a number of persons forming one of the sides in a game or contest * a number of persons associated in some joint action

Thinking about the word ?team? and its definition ? look it up in any dictionary and I am sure you would get something similar if not the same as above ? the first instance will always allude to a game, a contest or a challenge and the second the joining of people in ?action?.

Looking at this from an analytical stance, it would be considered appropriate that joining together in a challenge/contest/game could precede the joining together in action. Thus ? the team challenge preceding a greater sense of team bonding!

I?m not trying to state that people cottoned on to the potential of team building challenges from a dictionary ? but the coincidental evidence is rather remarkable.

Team Building Challenges are able to speak for themselves in terms of their effectiveness and productivity. No longer do they merely focus on the need for better interaction between peers and colleagues, they also allow for an outlet of social involvement ? reflecting more on a team?s attitudes and progress.

The foundation of a team building challenge is simple ? getting a working group to accomplish something TOGETHER. The shared sense of achievement alleviates team morale, spirits and pushes the collective forward.

Team + Achievement + fun = happy team + greater productivity

The maths is simple ? no bones about it. Gone are the days of simply telling teams they have to work better together ? you need team relationships to grow. And like the dictionary says ? it starts with a challenge.

So back to the numerous team building companies out there ? the sky?s the limit for choice on team building challenges. Your team really can do ANYTHING. But take a step back ? look at the bigger picture and take note of what you NEED. A team building challenge should not last for just one day, one hour or one session ? its outcomes need to last much longer than that.

Don?t choose lightly, a team building challenge is like a partnership ? where YOU and IT can work towards the greater goal (even choosing the right fun challenge can increase team bonds).

Think about your team, think about what you are building on(your start position) and think about the challenge to get to the finish line.

BOOK YOUR TEAM BUILDING CHALLENGE NOW!

A Q&A with Ian Hacking on Thomas Kuhn's Legacy as "The Paradigm Shift" Turns 50

News | More Science

The seminal work on science's periodic upheavals may be more relevant to an earlier era

THOMAS KUHN Thomas Kuhn Image: Molwick

Scientific American's review of Thomas Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions in 1964 ended with the pat pronouncement that the book was "much ado about very little." The short piece, which appeared two years after the initial publication of Structure as a monograph in the International Encyclopedia of Unified Science, discarded as unoriginal Kuhn's critique of the positivist argument that science progresses relentlessly forward toward the truth.

The reviewer's glib dismissal missed the mark. Unquestionably, Kuhn's work has absorbed countless barbs over the decades. But it also counts as one of the most influential 20th-century works of philosophy and history of science. Structure has sold 1.4 million copies and the overused "paradigm shift" has attained the status of effete clich? in countless, numbing business conference PowerPoints. (See John Horgan's "Reluctant Revolutionary," an interview with Kuhn in the May 1991 Scientific American.)

Kuhn advanced the idea that scientists in a particular field share an existing set of practices?a paradigm?that allows them to labor away using common methods on like research problems?what he labeled "normal science." Eventually, experimental anomalies accrue that foment revolutionary change?the ballyhooed paradigm shift that overturns the existing order and ushers in a new era that may differ radically from the old.

That "incommensurability," as Kuhn termed it, held that after a true revolution, an existing body of theory bears no relationship to the new theoretical framework, the opposite of "standing on the shoulders of giants." In other words, the concept of mass in the new world of E = mc2 differs fundamentally from the same designation in the old classical mechanics of F = ma. Kuhn's use of the word incommensurability has been distorted to mean that he advocated discarding the objective consideration of a new theory, exchanging rationality for "scientific relativism" in which the loudest voice for a pet idea prevails, what one critic characterized as "mob psychology."

Kuhn has procured a prize spot in the pantheon, but how have his ideas endured since the year that the Beatles released their first record. The prominent Canadian science philosopher Ian Hacking has written an introduction to the 50th-anniversary edition of The Structure of Scientific Revolutions that addresses the somewhat dated nature of Kuhn's work, even while casting an admiring eye on the original accomplishment.

[An edited excerpt of an interview with Hacking follows.]

Do you think that Kuhn's ideas about the importance of revolutions propelling scientific change still hold as much sway today as they did 50 years ago?

Kuhn was the intellectual of whom many scientists said: he's "telling it as is it is" insofar as talking about a process of "tinkering" in terms of theory and experiment followed by radical changes. But often what Kuhn had in mind were some very spectacular incidents in the history of the sciences that changed our way of looking at the world. I'm not at all sure that that is going to continue as the way in which the sciences develop since now the life sciences in general have replaced physics as queen of sciences. I don't think that Kuhn's model for scientific change is necessarily going to prevail. But it still remains the case that Kuhn gave us a spectacularly new and vivid version of what he thought was going on. That will stand there forever, and that will be a permanent part of the repertoire of historians and philosophers and people in science studies in general.
