The Plateau Government said on Tuesday that it would soon enforce the ban on the operations of commercial motorcycles in Jos and Bukuru metropolis.
Mr Chris Hassan, Commissioner for Transport, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos.
``The bill banning motorcycles was passed by the House of Assembly and was promptly signed into law by Gov. Jonah Jang.
``In a couple of weeks from now, government will roll out 500 tricycles acquired to replace the motorcycles.
``Immediately we do that, we shall go ahead and enforce the ban on motorcycle operations within Jos and Bukuru metropolis.''
He said that government had acquired and distributed 100 mini taxis and 100 buses to ply the Jos and Bukuru metropolis to meet the transportation needs of members of the public.
Hassan explained that the ministry of transport was ``very critical'' in the enforcement of policies toward Jos city's renewal, stressing that the policies were in line with global changes on city renewal.
He said that the administration, at its inception, contracted a renowned Irish firm to carry out the transportation master plan of Jos and Bukuru metropolis to ensure sanity in the transportation system.
``The firm had since submitted its report, we are saddled with the designing of the transportation policy as well as its implementation.''
The commissioner said that under the new policy, the Vehicle Inspection Office section would become a full-fledged directorate while the Plateau Express Service would be repositioned as an agency for effective performance.
Commercial motorcyclists have always been accused of fuelling the Jos crisis with many of them believed to be used in carrying out attacks on the people.
Efforts to ban their operations resulted into a major conflict in 2010.
